A Personal History In Trans Lit
A Personal History In Trans Lit LUNA Itâs eighth grade and I canât stop reading this slim YA novel. After enough reminders from the school librarian, I return their copy and special order my own copy from the bookstore/café I work at. There are some books I reread because Iâm a depressed teenager who finds a semblance of sanity in returning to her favorite books but I donât even particularly like Luna. I think the narrator is bratty. (I do like how much opera she listens to because I donât know anyone else my age who likes opera.) Luna comes off as selfish and flat, I donât even enjoy the authorâs use of language, and yet I canât stay away from this book. Thereâs something in it, something familiar that Iâve never felt before and it terrifies me. Each time I read the novel the pain inflicted upon Luna feels real, sometimes realer than my own. Even though this book hurts me I keep rereading it because finally I know a girl like me. I canât put that into words yet, Iâm still telling myself Iâm a boy, but buried deep inside me is the knowledge that Iâm a girl and now I know that Iâm not alone. FINDING THE REAL ME Iâm fourteen, at summer camp, and Iâm having a hard time being a boy. In our workshops about gender as a social construct I find myself lying about how comfortable I am in my âmaleâ identity to cover up the fact that I actually loathe every minute of it. One of the counselors sees something in me and very casually gives me this anthology of personal essays from a wide variety of trans people. Just like Luna I find myself reading and rereading it in a way that might border on obsessive. The glossary is full of foreign words and I read it out loud but under my breath, each word (ze, mtf, cisgender) sounding like the spells from my favorite fantasy stories. Among the contributors there is such a wide variety of identities, pronouns, and experiences that I become disoriented as I try to take everything in. Thereâs so much pain and heartbreak in these essays but thereâs even more joy and hope and strength and happiness. This is new to me, the trans stories Iâm used to are the ones from television shows like CSI or Law and Order which always involve us on a slab in some morgue, even Luna ends right as she begins to experiences any real happiness. For the first time in my life I know that there are trans stories out there that arenât full of suffering and for some reason I find this immensely comforting. NEVADA âWhat do you mean you havenât read Nevada?â I donât appreciate the tone in my friendâs voice, like most of their recommendations this comes with an element of Cool Kid mentoring the schoolâs Nerdy Girl, an element of Read THIS If Youâre The Right Kind Of Trans, but their recommendations usually end up being solid so I let it slide and borrow their copy. Iâm almost 21, in my first year of my second college, and while Iâm openly identifying as a nonbinary trans person I know that for me Iâm just gathering my courage to say that Iâm a woman. Nevada becomes an escape from my mess of a life, a submersion into a fictional world whose main characterâs life is such a shit-show that she makes me look like Iâm put together. Maria Griffiths is an irresponsible mess I want to give a stern talking to and yet itâs her story that begins to give me the space to come out. This is the first fiction piece about a trans woman Iâve read that doesnât focus on her com ing out, doesnât waste pages talking about medical procedures that I canât afford, doesnât try to educate me. Instead for the first time Iâm reading a book about a trans woman bicycling in Brooklyn while drunk and kind of stealing a car and just living her life and for the first time I can begin to see a life for me.

The Impact Of Corporate Politics On The Corporate World Essay
Over the years, the corporate world has been and continues to be plagued with high profile scandals and unethical business practices on the pretext of creating social and business values. For most global companies, corporate social responsibility and sustainability have become mere watchwords despite the fact they claim being their prominent company agendas. The reality is companies are too blind and ruthless to draw lessons from the past. Exxonââ¬â¢s Climate change controversy(1980ââ¬â¢s), Nikeââ¬â¢s sweatshop crisis (1990s) or even BPââ¬â¢s Deepwater oil spill (2010) are some of the most outrageous corporate scandals that shook the corporate world. Despite all these scandals, the recent Volkswagenââ¬â¢s emissions scandal (2015) is a clear indication that businesses will resort to any means to make money. These short-lived decisions have no doubt yet again created public cynicism in corporations and will continue to haunt their social accountability and responsibilit y. Volkswagonââ¬â¢s (VW) reputation, built up over decades, was in tatters overnight because of poor leadership vision and unethical business practices. Its emission scandal caught the corporate world gobsmacked and brought business ethics to the forefront and ripped into the stakeholderââ¬â¢s consciousness. What was supposed to be fuel efficient, eco-friendly peopleââ¬â¢s car turned out to be an environmental polluting monster, duping 11 million customers globally of their trust in the process. My Summer at Choate Rosemary Hall Free Essays
This summer at Choate Rosemary Hall was the best summer that I have ever had so far. The classes were challenging but also exiting at the same time. I really love the classes there because the number of student per one teacher is very small so the teachers give pay more attention toward you. We will write a custom essay sample on My Summer at Choate Rosemary Hall or any similar topic only for you Order Now Also, the student gets to know each other more so they can work together better. One of my favorite classes during the summer was Anatomy and physiology because we had a lot of hands on experience with dissection. My favorite dissection in the class is when we get to dissect and explore the anatomy and physiology of a rodentââ¬â¢s body because it was the longest and interesting dissection that we had during the summer program. When we finish with the dissection, our teacher takes a picture of our dissection and sends it to us and we had to label it. Another project that I like about Anatomy and Physiology is the owl pellet. We had to put back together a scattered rodent skeleton together and it was very time consuming. Other than the classes I also like the dorm life was. At home my parent do everything for me but at Choate I had to do everything myself, which made me feel like an adult. Every morning I had to wake up by myself and go to breakfast. My Favorite part about dorm life is laundry. My friend and I always wash our cloths together to save some money and we would just sit in the laundry room talking to each other about each other cultures. One time I forgot my highlighter in my pocket during washing so all of my cloths was ruin. The mistake of putting a highlighter in my pocket turns out really cool because it made one of my shirts really pretty so everyone said that I was the best mistake that Iââ¬â¢ve ever made. Choateââ¬â¢s campus was big. On the first day of class I wanted to change my schedule and didnââ¬â¢t know anywhere to go to so I had to run around the campus trying to find the summer program office for almost an hour. Every day I have only 30 minutes for lunch because one of my classes was on the other side of the campus and it would take me 10 minutes to walk there. I think my favorite building at Choate is Hill House because that is my dorm, the dining hall, and itââ¬â¢s also the place that my friend and I hang out before study hours. Hill House has an air conditioned lounge that no one knows. Therefore, it was our secret hideout and our hanging spot. Also every Saturday we held a movie night at Hill House because checks in is at 11 p. m. My favorite part about this summer is spending time with friends that I had made during the program. In the beginning I didnââ¬â¢t know anybody else other than the Memphis Prep scholars so I stayed with them. After the first week I start to know more people so I hang out with other people. We would go to the movie almost every Wednesday because we had nothing to do. Sometime we would go to the library to read mangas and books because some of us had to finish our summer reading list. Usually after we go to the library we would go to the candy shop down the street from the library to get ice-cream. Sometime we would skip dinner at Choateââ¬â¢s dining hall and have dinner at a restaurant that is next to the candy shop. The one thing that I hate the most about this summer program is saying good bye. On the last week of the program we eat dinner together at a restaurant every night or ordering Chinese food, trying to spend as much time with each other as possible. Also, on the last mall trip we would try to buy things to gift each other so that we will remember each other. On the night of the Last Dance we went the basement and talked to each other and signed each other shirts and journals. The last day of the summer program was the hardest day for me because all of my friends were leaving. We cry every time someone is leaving and we would stand there watch them leave and by the end of the day all of my tears were dried up. Attending Choateââ¬â¢s summer program is the best thing that had happened to me. The classes and teachers were great. The campus was big and it made me feel like Iââ¬â¢m in college. I had made a lot of new friends that I will never forget. Choate summer program is also life changing for me because I learn how to be independent from my parents and do things on my own. It had expanded my knowledge in Anatomy and Physiology. I also learn that there are a lot of opportunities out there waiting for you to take it and you have to work hard to achieve it. The best opportunity that I had taken this year is to apply for Memphis PREP because without them I wouldnââ¬â¢t know about Choate Rosemary Hall or any other boarding school. Innovation and Change
Question: Discuss about theInnovation and Change. Answer: Set the Scene Valley view publishing is a virtual business established in 1990 by two friends and partner Angus Smissen and Dante Lucifer. The company publish guides for tourism and recreation with respect to different part of Australia. The company had twelve people to manage the affairs but conflict between the partners in 1994 lead to formation of Clearwater (Valley view publishing. 2014). It was headed by Lucifer who took three staff from Valley view publishing. At present both are competitor and it is found that Valley view publishing is facing reduction in profits. It is also facing the cramped condition with growth in staff. The goals and objectives of the company is produce quality tourist guide. Change in Detail The shareholders of Valley view publishing put forth their suggestion to minimize the overhead cost and identify better ways to market the product economically. There is also strong resistance on the part of the shareholders on the decision of Valley view publishing to move to new location or expanding the current one (Thornton, 2004). Based on above factor Valley view publishing has planning two significant changes in the operation of the company. It is venturing into E-Commerce and a range of new product. E-Commerce Valley view publishing will redesign the website and start a new marketing approach along with a new distribution process though old system will exist. The funding for the change will be arranged (Thornton, 2004). In addition Valley view publishing will undertake organization restructure and review of administrative officers role and responsibility with the objective of improving the efficiency. New Product After from publishing books Valley view publishing will develop a range of new product namely CDs, Videos, maps, guides on ecotourism and travel literature promoting the travellers story. External and Internal Forces Contributing to the Change On analysing the change in Valley view publishing it is found that both internal and external forces contribute to the change. The internal factor influencing the change include the reduction in profit, large staff, space issue in the office, shareholder concern related with the cost escalation in overhead (Todnem 2005). The external factors influencing the change include enquires about online buying from international customers, young customers demanding online sales, competition from Clearwater and market share taken by competitor. Change Affecting Work Area in Terms of Staffing and Work Practice The growing staff made the limited space in the office resulted in restricted space impacting the performance of the staff in the workplace. The proposed change of moving to new premise or expanding the existing workplace will make the work environment in the office more conducive and improve the motivation level of staff in the office. It will have a positive impact on the work practice in the company (Anderson, Anderson, 2010). The process of restructuring the organization and reviewing the role and responsibility of administrative officer will increase the efficiency of the staff that will improve the performance of the company. The change of venturing into E-Commerce business will open new opportunity for Valley view publishing demand enhancement in the IT skill and knowledge of the employees to effectively handle the E-Commerce business process. Benefits of the Change in Terms of Success The management of Valley view publishing has identified three changes namely change of location, venturing into the E-Commerce business and developing a range of new product and it will benefit the company by improving the business positively. The benefits of change with regard to the new premises or addition to the existing one will improve the workplace environment and employee morale (Paton, McCalman, 2008). The benefit of E-Commerce will improve the revenue and profit. Thus it will assist in addressing the issue of reduci8ng profit and market share. Similarly the benefit of introducing a range of new product will improve market share. Process for Implementing the Change The process for implementing the change is related with nature of change. In context to Valley view publishing the change in location will be implemented by the administrative manager who will identify the suitable location, negotiate the cost, design the interior, affect the shift and fix opening schedule for new office (Hayes, 2014). The E-Commerce venture will be managed by the IT manager who will contact the software partner and develop the website, conduct the training for staff, conduct a launch campaign and launch the E-Commerce venture. The change of introducing a range of new product will be undertaken by the product manager who will develop each product and launch them in the market. Resolve Issues and Remove Impediments to the Change Any change planned by the company is always resisted by the staff and it is no different in case of Valley view publishing. The company faced resistance from the staff with three changes planned by the company namely new premises, E-Commerce venture and a range of new product introduction in the market. In context to the location change some employees opposed it may take more time for them to reach the new office and it reduce the time for personal and social life. The company removed this impediment to change by ensuring that the new office will in a central location and will not require additional time (Mujtaba, McCartney, 2009). The E-Commerce venture was opposed by the employees as it required IT skills and the staff felt insecure and the management of Valley view publishing removed this impediment to change by conducting IT training for the staff and motivating them to use internet and social media for career growth. The third change of new product development was well accepted by the company as they felt it will help to improve the profit and market share of the company. Thus Valley view publishing was able to resolve the issues and implement the change. Resources Needed to Implement the Change The change of location is a landmark decision for a company like Valley view publishing and they need resources like finance, staff and information and successful relocation plan for people and physical aspects, communicating the plan, engage the consultant, listen to concern and take action, fixing realistic expectations and change management after relocation (Hall, Hord, 2006). It will cost a hefty amount. The E-Commerce venture demand resources like domain, email address, search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), payment gateway, Australian post or other courier and cargo with international exposure, web analytics to monitor business data conversion and visitors (Kotter, 2008). The cost involved in setting up E-Commerce would range from $807 for a start up to $1722 for small store while medium to large one can cost $ 4398 to $9074 respectively. The detailed costing in the table below Related Changes that Could Occur in the Future The three changed planed by Valley view publishing namely change of location, E-Commerce venture and introduction of new product. All the three changes can have related changes that could occur in the future. The change of location can lead to change in the office layout and change of design in the new office that can take place at the same time or in future (Thompson, Martin, 2010). The E-Commerce change can lead to further change like digital communication and participation in the social media to communicate with the target customers as it facilitate two way communications unlike the traditional method of communication. Earlier Valley view publishing was focussing on the traditional promotional mix to communicate the message. On the other hand the process of introduction of new products like CDs, Videos, maps, guides on ecotourism and travel literature promoting the travellers story will have related change promotional mix focussing on them. In the following financial year to 2005, there was a growth of under $ 4 billion which translated to only 6%. Therefore the life cycle at the moment is at lag phase. Nike has in the past used the Beetles songs, and Chinese theme advertisements. (Foot wear global market, Online). Reebok on the other hand have been active on sponsorships such as the NBA and other sporting functions. (Reebok Stores, Online) Barriers to exit to operate in this market place The barriers for exit for Nike from this market segment are the multi billion sponsorship arrangement and contracts that have been made by the respective sport organs and athletes. They are also the market leaders. (Foot Wear Global Market, Online). The exit barriers for Reebok are very high due to its acquisition by Adidas whom the have become entity. (ESPN, 2008.) Macro - environmental analysis The Sociological Conditions conditions that impact on Nike are the preferences for low performance products. This has seen the rise of demand of low cost footwear and apparels always from the core sport gear. (Foot wear global market, Online) The Technical Conditions that affect Nike are its manufacturing locations. Change Someones Life for the Better Essays
Change Someones Life for the Better Essays Change Someones Life for the Better Essay Change Someones Life for the Better Essay I can change someones life for the better by simply discussing the awareness of cancer. Cancer is the number two most threatening disease that is killing our people. It is very important for our people to know this disease and come up with a resolution on defeating this disease once and for all. There has to be a cure on cancer. The more we know the more greater chance that there is a cure. In the U. S. National Cancer institutes Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database for 2006 said that the estimates show in all invasive cancer the total of 11,0280. 00 ;for males it show the amount of 5,116,000 and for females 5,912,000. Many people need to understand that it is affecting us as humans. Also I came across the Global Cancer Facts and Figures on cancer. org and according to american cancer society that about 7. 5million died from cancer. On the site it shows you maps of different parts of the countries Africa, Europe, Asia, Polynesia, Micronesi a, Melanesia, Australia, South and North and Central America. The table of charts of men and women and overall new cancer cases and deaths of 2007 showed more hundred thousands. Whether if cancer is affecting you or loved one , friends, family , etc. Cancer does not discriminate it can kill any ethnicity black, white, hispanic, asian , etc. This is a long war with cancer and modern medicine has little affect on it. Myself personally did not know too much about cancer. Unfortunately, I had a rude wakening when my sister was first diagnose with stage 4 cervical cancer. It was too late to do really anything she took her chemotherapy and radiation like she was advised too by her doctor. I try to stay optimistic and told her and my family that chemotherapy and radiation will work and that everything would be fine. Unfortunately, the cancer didnt regress and she died at age 29. My family and I didnt understand how could this happen, what is the cause of this. I am the only one in family that is a natural born citizen in America . My family wanted me to explain to them what this cancer is and I didnt know what it was. The only thing I knew was that it kills you once you have it. Shortly after, my sister death we were all still mourning over the loss in our family; then my mom found out that she too had this deadly disease. Unfortunately, she also was first iagnose with stage 4 cancer adenocarcinoma. I research what it was in wikiepedia and it states Adenocarcinoma is a cancer of epithelia originating in glandular tissue. Epithelial tissue includes, but is not limited to, the surface layer of skin, glands and a variety of other tissue that lines the cavities and organs of the body. My own definition is that adenocarcinoma is cancer in your major primary organs your brain, lungs, liver , etc. No primary source that can be identified so then how can you treat the cancer. We tried radiation for the brain and as soon as she was done with her last dosage of radiation. My mom was sent home and she died 2 days after christmas of last year. It is extremely hard for me because I didnt know what to say or do. I just couldnt explain what was happening. That is the reason for keeping the public aware of this killer disease. Todays media advertise mostly sex, products, addictive legal drug and little on cancer. Why is that? Why not more on the number two most killers disease cancer. There are many different types of cancer but, out of all primarily lung cancer is the leading one. Then there is oral cancer which is leading 3 times most then breast and ovarian cancer cases. Why is this not important? Is it something that were eating or is it something that were lacking. Is it something that where inhaling in the air that is polluted or is it just the lack of pure oxygen. The public needs to be aware of this on going battle of Cancer. The more people know the more greater chance we will have to defeat this cancer. cancer. gov/
